Despacito was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017 and became the top-streamed track within 6 months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music has not only brought attention back to this genre but also to Latin music generally. In 2015, there were two predominantly Spanish-speaking songs in Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. At the peak of Despacito's chart-topping success in 2017 19 songs mostly in Spanish reached into the Top 100. The number grew to 41 in 2020. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix of Despacito (2017) well-known artists soon began collaborating with reggaeton musicians, such as Drake with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna with Maluma for Medellin (2019). In 2020, several Reggaeton performers were expressing displeasure about the trend of their genre to the mainstream. But a newer generation such as Rauw Alejandro was keen to keep the trend going. The incorporation of elements from electronic dance music, and different styles was an accepted practice.
